Shortly before the death of Paul W. Bear, Dr. Halverson's grandfather, Paul gave her $2,000, and asked her to make it grow. Dr. Halverson decided that the best way to make it grow was to found a school. She wanted a school focusing on math and the sciences while preparing students for college. The school started on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus, where three buildings were rented out to Tri-City Prep. In 2000, the first graduating class was commenced. In 2005, the school moved to its permanent home on 5522 Side Road, where a school complex was built.
